Anticancer: A New Way of Life

A friend of mine told me about this book, and let me borrow a copy, it is called "Anticancer: A new Way of Life." by Dr. David Servan-Schreiber. I wasn't sure what I would think about this book, but decided to open it up and read it anyway. I haven't finished it yet, and normally I don't recommend books without finishing reading them, but I think this is one of those books that everyone should read. The Dr. that wrote the book was diagnosed with a brain tumor and through his experience and research he tells of the life style changes he made to help with his cancer. One thing that I like about this book is that he never tells you that you should avoid modern medicine, instead he encourages following the Doctors medical advice, but also improving your odds by having a lifestyle change. What he recommends are common sense changes really. For example: Exercise 30 min six days a week, Expose yourself to sunlight 20 minutes each day (vitamin D), Practice a method of relaxation (manage your stress/anger/depression), Acceptance of yourself/resolve past issues, Share your emotions with others (don't deal with everything alone/have a good support system), Enjoy life (laugh), Eat a healthy balanced diet (we all know what this means), Live in a clean environment (no smoke or other harmful pollutants). His first few sentences in his book say," Cancer lies dormant in all of us. Like all living organisms, our bodies are making defective cells all the time. That's how tumors are born. but our bodies are also equipped with a number of mechanisms that detect and keep such cells in check." He says that some peoples immune fighting systems don't work as well as others and that is where he begins to talk about other things we can do to improve our odds when fighting these defective cells. As I have been reading this book I have decided that why not try to do everything within my power to help our baby get better, and to keep her healthy (along with the rest of my family). He backs up his findings with different research studies that have been done all over the world. He also talks about his personal experiences in dealing with the prognosis of a serious illness and dealing with all aspects of it. This part is probably more interesting to those people who have gone or who are going through this type of experience. The idea of a new way of life, a healthier way of life is something that everyone can benefit from.

Great insight!! I think that there is actually so much we can do to prevent some of these awful diseases. Rich has always maintained that stress has a huge impact on our health as well. So, that is what I have been working on...stress management. It is really interesting when I am eating well and getting the physical activity that I should, how much better I do feel overall. Why then, does it seem so difficult to accomplish sometimes? Always something to work on, but definitely in a good way! Thanks too, for helping me with my blog. I'm sure I'll love it!!!
Love ya, Julie

Hi Darlins', Love your classy new background!!! Such great advice from your book, and I believe each suggestion is 100% correct. Hope you are able to take your little family out for some fresh air and a ride in the stroller for the little ones. Be sure to laugh a lot, even during the stressful times. We love you all and know you will be made equal to your new lifestyle by our loving Heavenly Father. Tell the kids we "Love them Most". Gr and Gr R

Sorry about the last comment. It really wasn't your mom, just me, Miss Patti. I forgot and used my identity that I use for my girls blogs.

Isn't it great that you have been showed such a great book. I know that timing is so important. When we are on a certain unfamiliar path such as what you are going through we start looking at and reading things that pertain to time and the season of life we are in. A year ago that book would be on the bottom of the list right? So neat someone is willing to share something so good. Grandpa and Grandma H. have honestly taught so much about how being positive is half the battle in facing life's challenges. I know we have beat a dead horse when I bring up something we have used for 20 1/2 years, but that is the whole reason we have been in Melaleuca all these years. It has taught those principles and promoted those exact ideas since they started business 23 years ago and we have been fortunate enough to have been taught that and live it as much as we can. We have basically tried to implement every one of those concepts over the course of our 20 years with them and sharing it with others. Those exact things you talked about in the book is something we learned in 1989. The timing is not always right for everyone, but we have tried real hard to share it with those we love and care about. Mental and Physical well being, and doing something about our own environment is what they care about most. Using all the environmentally safe and effective products fits like a glove as we become aware of what really affects our whole well being. Sorry this ended up long. We love you all!
